Grass Pollen Forecast

Tuesday, 8 July 2008

The irishhealth.com pollen and airborne allergen forecasts use data provided to us by the UK National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit's network.

These forecasts can assist people who suffer from asthma and allergic rhinitis to plan their activities. The forecasting service provides an index of the risk of being affected by airborne allergic pollens.

Low (0-29 grass pollen grains/m3)

Medium (30-49 grass pollen grains/m3)

High (50-149 grass pollen grains/m3)

Very High (>150 grass pollen grains/m3)

Leinster

There is a risk of high grass pollen counts where it remains dry and bright for prolonged periods. Showers will cause counts to decrease locally.

Munster

Rain expected later and so moderate grass pollen counts predicted. Showers will cause counts to decrease locally.

Connacht

There is a risk of high grass pollen counts where it remains dry and bright for prolonged periods. Showers will cause counts to decrease locally.

Ulster

Risk of moderate grass pollen counts. Showers will cause counts to decrease locally.

General Outlook: Wednesday: Rain is forecast to move north across Ireland, with clearer showery conditions following. Generally low pollen counts expected in Leinster and Connacht, but there is a risk of grass pollen counts increasing to moderate in Ulster and Munster. Thursday: Another showery day. There is a risk of grass pollen counts increasing to moderate where it remains dry and bright for long periods, but rain will cause counts to decrease. Grass pollen affects about 95% of hay fever sufferers. Many sufferers may experience symptoms of hay fever when grass pollen counts are moderate, and low grass pollen counts may cause hay fever symptoms in sensitive individuals. Low to moderate concentrations of pollen from allergenic weeds (e.g. dock, plantain and nettle) are also likely to be in the air when conditions are suitable. Weed pollen affects about 20% of hay fever sufferers.
