Hi Anonymous... I very rarely know when I will get my period... I used to know a couple of days in advance with the tingling feeling in your stomach but these days they just arrive with little or no prior warning.  I would doubt that the implanon is damaged as it is made from very flexibile material.  Call the GP that put it in tell him that you would like him / her to check it out.

Hi Irish teen - the side effct could be normal considering you hadn;lt had a period since the insertion. It is rare but the the implanon can become damaged however you would not overdoes on oestrogen as it only contain progesterone. Nonetheless, if you are concerned, you can have an x-ray or scan to determine if it is ok.

Lladies, Iv been away from this for a while as ive been having no problems until now. Ive had the implanon in for the last 19 months and havnt had my periods since it was inserted. I was at boxing last nyt nd suddenly felt unwell, my partner had to grab my arm really tightly in order to do the move correctly. This morning i had incredable cramps in my lower stomach nd an hr later i had got my periods!!! Could the implanon have cracked or snaped in any way?? If so is this dangerous?? Im not sexually active so im not worried about the contraception, im just worried that i might over dose on eastrogen!!

PLEASE HELP..............

Sexypants - I'm reminded of the phrase - 'no-one ever died of embarrassment', which is true, unless embarrassment prevents you getting a smear test. Remember gyne's are used to it and do these all the time, just like a dentist is used to looking into you mouth and around your teeth. Request a female doctor (or nurse as some nurses are also qualified smear takers) and try to relax as much as you can. It may be a little bit uncomfortable but there is no reason it should ever be painful. It only takes a couple of minutes and it is a small price to pay for peace of mind. Alcohol beforehand is not a good idea becuase it can cause excess bleeding which would affect the implanaon insertion. But if you feel you are that nervous or tense a mild relaxant may help. However if they are doing the implanon on the first day of your period, they won't do the smear on that day as well, obviously. If the implanon insertion are only done on a tuesday than it very iunlikely they catch everyone on the first day of their period. But even if it's not during your period, there is no reason that should be a problem for you at all, what would simply be advised is that you use alternative protection until the protection of the implanon kicks in.Like starting the pill mid-cycle instead of the first day of your period - it takes some time for the protection to kick in.

hi sexypant,

you can get it inserted at anytime during your period. If you do miss it for any reason they will still put it in for you. I have had the implanon inserted twice and both times i missed my period.

Have you checked with your doc if they insert inmplanon yet? the doc needs to specialy trained to offer that service.

Oh god can you imagine, it'd be so embarsn, i wonder if I get a bit drunk before I go in would they cop on or would they still do it ? i must book the smear test then so aswell as the implanon!

If it's the first day of my period then I'd have to prob book it on the day i get it then, but the clinic for this implanon only opens on Tues, so like whats the odds on getting it on a tues? hope it can be during ur period you can get it inserted!

No, Sexypants and I cannot emphasise this strongly enough. EVERY women should have a smear test WITHIN A YEAR OF BECOMING SEXUALLY ACTIVE.

Please forgive the capital letters but my own niece is currently having treatment for advanced cervical cell changes at age 23 and if it wasn't for the fact that she had had a smear test after having her baby I just hate the thought of what waiting another 2 years would mean.

The national cervical screening program is for women over 25 but every sexually active women should have regular smear tests with her own doctor or clinic regularly.

This is vital and could save your life.

Dee, the docotor will only tell you that you should have a smear done before you get the implanon in, if you haven;t had one in the last two years. They are the national smear guidelines.

Ramera,

You have to apply to the other docotr for the change on your card. If you get a nice doctor that will just see you the once to have this done, then they will take you but they will charge you. I had to use another doctor other than my own gp on my medical card who told me the procedure.

If you use any other docotor other than your own, they give you a form to fill out to be posted to the hse for them to change the details. I had to ring my local gun clinic in the hospital to find a doctor who did implanon and then for them to ring the doctor and ask him to do it as a once off.

This process of filling out forms stops people with medical cards running around different doctors getting free drugs over and over again.

Annymous, you could be lucky that your own gp does implanon and if not, you could get lucky with asking your docotor to refer you but you will more than likely be charged. your best bet is to call your gp and as them for their advise?

I think it should be the first day of your period but the receptionist can probably tell you for definite. Yes, you'd book an appointment pretty much like that. '

Hi, my name's Mary and I would like to book an appointment to have the Implanon inserted.'

They inject local aneasthetic in arm andmake a small incision unde the skin in order to insert it. I can be uncomfortable as the aneasthetic wears off so but there is no reason for it to be painful.

Thats not completely true, the following was taken off the citizens information page;

You can use your medical card for up to 3 months if you are living temporarily in a different area. In this case, you can attend any GP in the area participating in the medical card scheme. If you are going to be away longer than 3 months, you should apply to the Local Health Office of that area, for a medical card. If you move to a different part of your own HSE Administrative Area, you can apply to change your doctor.

So you can go to any doctor with your medical card does not always have to be the one that is printed on the card.

Hi Dee, is it not the case that if your own GP does not provide a particular service then they are obliged to refer you to a doctor who does - this then should be covered by the medical card. Would that not be the case?

the medical card does not always cover it. It may cover you for your own gp but if you go somewhere else your not covered as the medical card can only be used for one gp. You can get the actual implanon on prescription no problem with the card but the insertion and removal can be charged. I was charged as i had to use another gp. My gp did not do implanon. you need to ring and ask does your own gp insert/remove implanon and if not you will be charged by someone else, roughly €100.

Hi Sexypants, yes you can certainly book an appointment, as long as you are going private (I don't know the process with medical cards but it would be best to ring that clinic / women's centre and ask).  with a womens clinic in another area. They can provide you with the perscription to get at a chemist near there for them to fit or may be able to provide it to you directly. If you do go to your own GP, pre-empt the nosy people and ring your Mum, casually like, just after amd let it drop in conversation that you were at the Dr, that morning. Thre can be lots of reason for seeing a doctor - stomach upset, blood test for anemia, period problems - if you get my drift.

Long story short cos I already tried posting this but don't know if it went thru!

basically where I'm from if you go to the doctor people are nosy and want to know why, so if they see me they'll tell my mum that they saw me and mum would be wondering why I went and not told her and she'd be paranoid. Now I know there is a women's clinic an hour away from where I live and was wondering could I get it done there, I read that you need a prescription, does that mean I need it from My GP??? cos I really don't want to go to my g.p! mum would go off the head if she new I was getting the implanon as shes set in her old ways and thinks im a virginInnocent. I'm 22 years old and with my b.f for 2 years, I really want this done, I have a medical card would this cover it?

Hello, I'm wanting to get the implanon, but I don't know about getting this done. You see I live in an nosy area, that if you go to the doctor everyone knows about it and I don't want people coming up to my mum saying oh I saw your daughter at the GP the other day, then mum will be wondering why I went and not told her, I cannot tell her about what I want done cos she's so fecking set on her old ways, so to her I'm still a virginInnocent! now I've been going with my B.F for 2 years and when we're drunk I wake up and I can't even remember what happened so I want to put my mind at ease and use this method. now there is a Women's Center in Letterkenny which is only an hours drive away I was wondering if I could just book an apointment there would they accept me, I read sumtin that I need a prescription to use this, would I have to go to my own GP to get this? cos if that's the case I don't want to. Any info would be very handy. thanks x SmileKiss

hi all,im 25 and i have the implanon in for about 6 months now and before i got it in i was scared silly by reading blogs that women tell their horror stories about it....crazy weight gain, neverending periods, loss of libdo etc etc. so i promised myself that if i got it in and it went well id tell ye all!!

IT'S FANTASTIC!! my periods have stopped..they got lighter and lighter until now they are completely stopped....no weight gain...nothing that sittin on my butt eating pizza isnt responsible for. i was always terrible for remembering my pill due to shift work and i was always concerned due to a dodgy stomach! the only thing that has been affected is my libdo but thats nothing my wonderful boyfriend isnt keepin on top of (excuse the pun)...i would recommend it to anyone...at least to give it a go...if it doesnt work out u can always take it out when ever u want. i have completely forgotten its in my arm until i was to move it around to freak out my sister.

go for it girls...its one last thing u have to worry about   Kiss

Hi Mrs Louth, I as in for a smear and check up on Friday and the nurse told me that the i njection is now only considered to bde suitable for short term use becuase of the risks to bones density and is probably fine for 2 or 3 injections in say, teens, who weren;t good about remembering their pill but not for women in their 20's and 30-'s who could have the implant or mini-pill.

thanks to all

even just to read about other people that are going through the same makes it easier, i am going to leave it in and see how it goes, its been in for 15 months so nearly half way there.

i used to be on the injection that you get every three months, was on it for 3 years and then had a bone density scan done and found out that i now have osteopenia was so shocked to find out that i have it am only 24 so never really worried about it. did anyone else have a scan after they were finished with the injection

Hi all, I have had Implanon in 18 months now, I have had a mix of effects, originally I had no period for approx 6 months then started getting spotting every 6 weeks or so now for the last few months I have had a period every 4 weeks or so... I would wait and see how things change.  It seems to be different every few months with me... it may change again for you. I wouldn't get it out just yet.

Hi Ms Louth, when I was looking into getting the moirena I did hear that this was not uncommon but it doesn;t mean that there is any problem or that you're not protected so it wouldn't really be any reason to get it removed, especially as you are not havign any other problems with it - unless of course the periods are painful, in which case that should be investigated right away if it persists.

Hi Kayla, I don't think havimg periods on it will mean you're not protected. So far as I know you are still protected from pregnancy so it is still fulfilling it's purpose. Unless of course you are on it to prevent periods, but I don't think that's garaunteed with the implanon

HI all, I have had my implanon in for 10 months now, and up til last month i had the worse side effects, weight i couldnt shift, constant bleeding and spotting, thankfully they have gone in the last few weeks cause i was going to get it out and what a waste of money that would have been, though i must admit my libdo has just gone down hill, slowly over the last 10 months it just has dissapeared, i really dont want to get rid of the bar is there anything i can take or do to change this?

hi, jst new to this but i thought i'd share with you my story!!

Well i'm in my early 20's and i'm going out with the same guy for nearly two years. condoms were never our favourite with us frequently going without(i know, stupid move!!) so then i heard about implanon through my local woman's centre. so on tuesday i got mine fitted.

To my shock it wasnt as painful as i thought and i've got a tiniest bruise on my arm! also had a very mild headache on wednesday but nothing since which is great! the only MINOR complaint i have is that i seem to be constantly hunger which i was warned about!!but no bleeding-so far so good Smile

so the moral of my story is that this is great and that i would advice anyone to get it-3 years of no not worrying-sounds brill!!

i'll keep yous posted as to how its going-and sorry this is so long!! Laughing

hi bec,

aparently headaches are very common with having the implanon in. I have always suffered headaches but they got worse when i got the implant in. They can also interfere with your sleep. For the last 6 months i have not been sleeping and having the worst headaches of my life and not one doctor ever mentioned that the implanon can cause these side effects, instead i was put on so much medication. i would ask the doctor on your next appiontment to check this out.

hope this helps.

hi samii,

i got my implanon out yesterday as we are ttc, i asked the doctor on a side note was there a certain amount of times an implant can be used and is there any side effects. he said he never checked it out before but he thinks its fine because it can be used by an age woman. he said its an individual thing as to how long it takes to get pregnant but there should be no problem from using the implanon any number of times.

Hi Sammi, the implanaon is suitable for use for three years. after that you'll need to get it replaced with a new one for up to three years.

I couldn't see it causing problems tho considering the dosage is actually lower than the pill
