Most say they've never 'pulled a sickie'

[Posted: Tue 03/11/2009]

Sixty-seven per cent of people surveyed in our latest poll have said they have never taken sick leave when they were not sick.

Recently, it was revealed that 59% of all staff employed in the civil service availaed of sick leave in 2007 and the average period of absence was just over 11 days.

Sick leave in the civil service costs the State €64 million a year. In addition, it was also revealed recently that over €11 million is being paid out by the taxpayer to health service workers who are on long-term leave, including long-term sick leave.

We asked our retgistered readers if they had ever taken sick leave when they were not sick. Sixty seven per cent said never, 30% said very rarely and 3% said frequently.

I've never taken sick leave when I'm not sick because I believe it is unfair on ones colleagues as they are the ones who have to carry the brunt of it and do my work while I'm out
